A baby elephant was born at the Columbus Zoo on March 27th. Here is a video of the baby exploring his new surroundings at the zoo. He is 3 days old in this video.

Zoo finds WW2 ‘elephant angel’

Earlier I reported that the Bellevue Zoo in Belfast was looking for the family that took care of the elephant Shelia during WWII. Shelia was cared for by Denise Austin, whose nephew, David Ramsey, recently came forward. David said his cousin was eccentric, lived alone and only kept the elephant at night.

Should Circus Elephants Be Banned?

Almost half of New York City’s City Council Members have signed a bill that would “prohibit the display of wild or exotic animals for public entertainment or amusement”. Many animals, in addition to elephants, are included in the bill, although everyone admits this legislation is targeting Ringling Bros. and their use of elephants in the circus.

A wild kind of wash

Alice and Tiki, two elephants from the Wildlife Safari in Oregon, have been washing cars. Park officials state that it gives the elephants exercise and that the car wash is a fundraiser for the park.

A four part series, Animal Autopsy, will feature the dissections of an elephant, giraffe, crocodile and whale. Sounds gruesome to me.

Saga of the elephant tusks smuggled from Tanzania to Vietnam: Govt finally takes action

Vietnam plans to auction six tons of elephant tusks smuggled to the country from Tanzania. The ivory was seized by Vietnamese custom officials. Initially the Tanzania government did nothing about the issue but no plans to take action. It is believed that the tusks were enroute to China.

Representative Urban has been trying to push a bill through since 2005 that would require the humane treatment of elephants. This would impact the elephants that perform for the Ringling Bros. circus.

The elephant bandit in Orissa is at it again. He won’t let cars go by until the people stop to give him food. If he is not given food, the elephant pushes the car and stands in front of it.

Pink elephant is caught on camera

A baby pink elephant was photographed by Michael Holding in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The baby is probably an albino, which is very rare in African elephants.

Unfortunately, the baby’s chance of survival is not good, since he may suffer from blindness and skin problems.

Dates for Animal Planet Series on the Amboseli Elephants

The Amboseli Trust for Elephants has filmed a 13 part series on the Amboseli elephants for Animal Planet. Cynthia Moss reports that some of the dates for broadcast have been announced. She is still waiting to find out when the series will air in the US and the UK.

Dallas Zoo’s African Savanna to be home to elephants and others

The Dallas Zoo, best known for the controversy surrounding Jenny, an elephant they were going to send to Mexico, is building a 10 acre “savanna”. This attraction will be home to lions, ostriches, giraffes and elephants.

Who gave a home to elephant Sheila?

During World War II a number of animals at the Bellevue Zoo in Belfast were killed because the government feared that if the zoo were hit by a bomb that the animals would be dangerous to the population.

The elephant Shelia, however, escaped this fate, and lived in the backyard of a house near the zoo.

The zoo is now trying to find out who the people were that took care of Shelia.

Ringling Bros. circus elephants prepare for a safari through NYC

This morning was the 139th annual elephant walk in New York City. The Ringling’s Bros. circus has the elephants walk from the rail yard in Queens to Madison Sq. Garden.
