Tessa was 40 and had lived at the zoo since it opened in 1974. I question Eric Cole’s statement that Tessa lived longer that she would have in the wild. The elephant Shelia, however, escaped this fate, and lived in the backyard of a house near the zoo.

The zoo is now trying to find out who the people were that took care of Shelia.
